Hello fellow Mangoers and new-comers !

Welcome to the 2012 edition of the  Nanomango  !

First, some explanations for the new-comers:

What is the nanomango?

Just like every nano-things, it's basically a task to do in 30 days, for June the 1st to June the 30th.

And for this nano, it's doing a sequential art project.

What is sequential art exactly?

(I'm stealing our Com!mom's definition because I can't make better than that)

If it’s art somehow combined with words to tell a story, then it counts. Comic book pages, manga pages, newspaper comic strips, single panel comics, whatever you’re comfortable with doing. Whatever your base unit is - pages or strips or panels - that becomes what you’re doing one of per day.

How does it work?

Well actually, there is different alternatives.

  • The Royal (And Frankly Insane Trust Me) way: It's simple. 30 days=30 pages, one page a day. Like I said, Insane, but so very rewarding when you finish the last page.
  • The June Alternative, is less about drawing like a machine and more about thinking the basis of your comic and doing the 30D30P in November. You will still draw a picture a day, but following theme:
Week 1 (June 01-08) - Character designs. Etablishing your main characters.
Week 2 (June 09-15) – Backgrounds. Same with drawing of background where your story will take place.
Week 3 (June 16-22) - Putting it all together (characters & backgrounds).
Week 4 (June 23-30) - Scripts and thumbnail page layouts.
November - 30 pages in 30 days of the concept created in June

What kind of story can I draw/write?

Every kind. Superheroes, fan comics, shojo manga, magical girl cowboy, porny fairytales, robotic yaoi. Anything!

   BUT

Warn accordingly. Tag your erotic, violent, gore works or anything that could disturb other participants. And don't forget the LJ-cut!

How do I join?

Quite easily! First join the community (just click “join” in the profile page). There will be soon a special post for the headcount, where you will be able to say 'hi, I'm in !' so keep your eyes open !

And starting June the first, you can post your pages in the community. You don't have to post a page a day. You can wait and post several at once if you think it's better that way, or even post everything at the end of the month.

How do I post pages?

Simply embed your art in the post.

No text link please, it make reading a bit tedious.

To embed a picture, just use the code:  <img src=”http://www.Thisisyourpagename.jpg”> in the HTML tab.

You can use LJ's scrapbook if you don't feel at ease with FTP or don't have a personal site.

[info]wulfae has done a good tutorial about resizing pictures and hosting them on photobucket

[info]foxinthestars did the same with GIMP and Flickr

And Com!Dad, alias [info]adifferentdrumexplained the process of posting with Semajic

Use appropriate warning !

As I said earlier, if you think a subject in your story may bring controversy : Warn. That cover subjects like, nudity, eroticism, pornography, violence, gore, politic, yaoi or not, etc etc... Just a few words before the LJ-Cut will be enough.

LJ-Cut !

Use the LJ-Cut to hide the pages and avoid clustering people's Flist. Just put your pages between <lj-cut> here they goes your pictures</lj-cut>.

Tag !

Don't forget to add your member tag when posting ! The member tag is something like : « User:yourljname » in the tag list. We usually have the tag ready for the begining of the Mango, but if you don't have a tag at this time, just ask the mods !

Okay, I have [this problem], help please?

Don't worry. You can ask help anytime. Since our Com !Mom[info]darthneko and our Com!Dad [info]adifferentdrum are very very busy this year, you can ask me,[info]kineko, or [info]saraste_impi, or anyone else. We will try to answer as quick as possible!

Where did you all got these spify banners ?! I want one !

Another of Com!Mom and Com!Dad 's wonderful idea !

Here is the themplate, save it in your computer, make your banner and add it in the beggining of all your post. It'll help identifying your post at first glance .

Now, don't forget the most important thing of the nanomango:
We are here to have fun. We are here because we like to draw, to tell a story. Draw for fun, for your own pleasure! Be kind and polite with the other participants.  If you miss a day, do not worry, if you feel you're not going to make it, do NOT worry. Just do what make you happy. If you have a problem, or a doubt, just ask help.

In other words: Have fun.

It is indeed coming up on THAT TIME, the summer installment of Nanomango... and your com mom is 16 credits away from graduating, working full time, doing an internship, and losing my small mind. Likewise, [info]adifferentdrum, your com dad, has school and book submissions and stuff. Real life has eaten us for the summer. I'm sorry, but omg life is crazy right now and we really just can't.

HOWEVER! Many of you have done this many times! You know how it goes! You know the very open, user friendly, general, "if it floats your boat then we're pretty cool with it" rules! You all have posting access for the com! If you want to do Nanomango next month - PLEASE DO! I'm sorry Drummer and I won't be around much to cheerlead and tag wrangle, but please, don't let that stop you all from making comics and sharing them here and cheering each other on.

My very very best wishes to all of you - I have total faith in you, Mangoers! I'll try to peek in when I can, and we'll resume normal operations in November (when I GRADUATE! MwahahahahahaHAAHAAHAA!) but I hope you all rock next month. GO! GO! GOOOOOO!

First and foremost because I was an idiot and forgot to make a big ol' hubbabaloo! bob_artistBob Artist is now a legit published author!

Her novella, The Dragon Tamer, can be purchased at Dreamspinner Press for Two Dollah and 99 Pennies! Get your copy here! While you're at it! Go Like her FB page!

I bet you're wondering, what is The Dragon Tamer about? Well~

From the website:

Drake, a dragon master of the tamer clan, was barely a man himself when he saved the life of a youth burning with fever. Aedan, a fire mage, has dragon blood mingled with his own, creating such a tempestuous and volatile personality that it can literally burn him from the inside. Though Drake was able to calm the tumult enough to give Aedan a few years of peace, he knew that as the boy came of age, the fire in him would ignite once more.

When, years later, the effects of his fiery impulses force Aedan from the mage clan, his path crosses Drake’s again. Once more taming Aedan with a connection that joins them body and soul, Drake promises to protect Aedan forever—but he fears the day when “forever” might come to an end.

And feast your eyes on the sexy cover! )

Secondly! Comm Dad needs YOU!

The skinny! I'm going to a romance writing conference in ten days (BRB. Freaking out!) where I'll have a chance to pitch Darkmore, a paranormal romance that's lived in my head for twenty years! These folks I'm pitching to? They are not little fish. Actually they are quite big fish. I've got a brand-new author page over on That FB Thing and my goal is to hit 50 Likes or more by conference time. Help your Comm Dad out!

To sweeten the deal! Here's my pitch~

Transcript for the hearing impaired under here! )

If you liked it, slap your lil' ol Like on the Lex Chase FB Page!

I did finish all this on time, I swear! I just never got around to scanning the last 25 pages. I think things got more legible but less coherent after day ten or so. I'll only transcribe the text where it's not actually readable. Also it was two in the morning when I scanned these so they're not exactly best-quality.

Any comments, tips, or critiques you may have would be brilliant, and if I missed an illegible spot let me know.

So hey, NaNo...didn't happen. Like not even close. I'd had some way too ambitious schemes, and well. This happened instead. I'd planned to do most of my colors in real media, and work things over in Painter until they looked non-horrible; the real media side of this was about as far as they got. And working at a fast clip (for various healthish reasons, this was less a month of of work and more a week and a half) means that my tragic lack of skill is even more on display here than elsewhere.

I am seriously disappointed in me. But I'd be even MORE disappointed in me if I didn't at least admit my very visible failure. So, here! Perhaps someday, at least, someone feeling down about their own capability can look at these and say, hey, I'm not half that bad and the universe didn't break HER fingers!

So, hideous failure art and more natter after the cut:

Unf.  Technically it's December 1st, but these were drawn on November 29 and earlier, so I'm counting them as NaNoMangO pages, even though I just couldn't reach 30 this time.  Guilty of the mid-month slump am I, worse than usual, as I can often make up for that.  Not this time, I guess.  But here we go:

One page short of the introduction of another new fae and the next big cliffhanger.  MAN!

Still got to catch up on everyone's comics, but for now I'll say goodnight and see you next year!

So it's not exactly intelligible to anyone except me, but before the clock hits midnight over here on the west coast and before the power gets knocked out again by the wind, I thought I'd post the rest of what I got finished:

Sombulus - Beginning of Chapter 2 and a mini-comic )

Massive congratulations to the Mango winners, and thanks to everyone for the awesome glimpses into your stories! I hope to see you all in the [info]mango_grove and on the new website(!) when it launches!

I FINISHED!!! I was hoping to get more than 30 pages done, but that ended up not being possible with all my other current work. But I'm happy! At one point I was about 12 pages behind, so I did a whole lot of very fast drawing this month.

My reward for finishing? A "Happy Barrel with Alcohol!" (It's a booze-filled chocolate from the local Polish grocery store. ^_^) And now, off to catch up on everyone else's pages before jumping back to freelance!

So, on the 13th I finished page 10 for NaNo, and then I ran out of pre-written script. I expected it would be a couple days until I could get into the mood to write. Obviously, that didn't happen -___-

But! I was able to get 10 pages into sketches for my comic which is likely way, way more than I would have gotten on my own in this time. I was able to put off inking any of them right away, somehow, though it tempted me for a while. I did, however, distract myself from my omg-please-muse-just-speak-to-me mindset by getting started on two covers and designing a font (which was a bit of an adventure on its own. kerning, wth).

So here's what I managed:

Aaaaand this was the epic fail month from my part >_<. Didn't even finished my secondary aim. (I blame it on Murphy. Everything is his fault).
But well, I still draw and inked seven pages of the comics, all was not in vain and the most I can fill my buffer the better it will be.
Note to self: Next mango, planning for Murphy... or not planning at all and do a post it comics...
... I think I just mentally double dog dare myself with the post-it comics.

Hello, luvs! It's November 30th here in the US - last day to slave away on your pages. Did you make your goal? You win! I can't promise you a prize right now, but you win ALL the kudos and ALL the bragging rights. Hurray!

Hit a slump mid month and can't finish? Don't despair! It's - and I can't possibly say this long or loud enough - IT'S OKAY. These things happen. And hey, you got some art done, right? Had some ideas for stories? That's a win right there! Good for you!

And if you want to keep going past midnight and on into December - Do It! Nothing wrong with that, and we love your enthusiasm! That's what [info]mango_grove is for, after all. Keep the creative juices flowing!

Now, about the future of Nanomango. We ran a poll mid month about the idea of creating one centralized site and taking on some junior mods and cheerleaders. Responses were mixed but overall positive, some comments had good ideas, and your ComDad and I thank you all! [GROUP HUG!] So here's the plan:

  • I have registered webspace for www.nanomango.org - it's brand new and not propagating yet, but I expect it to show up sometime next week (meaning you'll be able to type it in and it'll take you to a placeholder page of some sort).

  • I will, before next summer's round, be writing a final definitive version of the nanomango FAQ and installing a discussion board of some sort on the site. It may be bare bones, but it will at least have all the information you need and a place to talk about it. Joining the site will, of course, be free and shouldn't require anything more than an email address.

  • The LJ comm will NOT be going away. It will still be here. Nanomango.org is meant to supplement this community and provide an alternative for those who don't like to interact on Livejournal. The nanomango.org site will be the hub - I will be linking it to this community and every other place that's running a Mango challenge that I can find. People can participate directly on the site if they want, as well as on any of the satellite sites, including right here. This is not "either/or", it's "and in addition to", do don't fear!

There will probably be more things in the future, especially once I get out of the ninth ring of hell college. I'd love to run better pre-games with more things to do, or maybe a small sort of artslam in the months before the Mango rounds. This needs to wait until I have more braincells to rub together, though, and more free time. x_x

NOW! Also, I will be contacting those of you who volunteered to help out when we get closer to summer. If you get surprise messages from [info]darthneko sometime next spring, it's because you threw your name in the hat to volunteer to keep the challenge running. ^_^ If you're still up for it then, that's great, if not, I'll totally understand. No pressure.

FINALLY... I can throw some code together and make a central "answer all your questions here" site for nanomango, but really, this challenge is all about ART and it'd be a pretty bare site without some fancy art to go with it. So... IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO OR DONATE SOME OF YOUR ART, FROM THIS NANOMANGO OR ANY PREVIOUS ONE, OR FROM YOUR WEBCOMIC, OR DRAWN ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT, to be used in the creation of graphics for the new nanomango site, PLEASE SAY SO IN THE COMMENTS TO THIS POST! It can be pencil, ink, color, sketchy, finished, anything. I'd love to have samples of the full gamut. It'll be used to create banners and headers and other assorted web graphics, you'll all get credited on a nice credits page, and I think it'd be really nice to decorate the site with the efforts of everyone who takes part in this crazy thing year after year. So don't be shy! Please, donate some art!

ALSO - if you have a webcomic of your own, in whatever state it's in (updated on schedule, long lasting, brand new, on hiatus, whatever!) PLEASE comment with the link to it. I want to pimp everyone who does Mango. ^__^
